Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with underwriting leadership to profitably insure more lives through data, technology and human insight
  • Maintain and understand a landscape view of data and technology trends and their impact on life underwriting
  • Assist in the evaluation of new underwriting tools and techniques that improve customer experience, reduce cost and/or enhance accuracy of risk selection 
  • Develop and execute plans for testing, analysis and integration of new tools and guidelines
  • Oversee the development and management the rulesets within the underwriting decision engine to meet production, cycle time and quality metrics
  • Coordinate with Life Finance (Actuarial) to assess and monitor the impact of opportunities and changes on mortality and expenses
  • Leverage reporting capabilities to monitor and optimize performance of the underwriting decision engine
  • Oversee the audit programs for both traditional and accelerated underwriting to ensure accuracy and profitability of the business
  • Report results to all stakeholders and reinsurance partners
  • Help coordinate and prioritize technology integrations
  • People management including selection, development, and inter/intra team building
  • May serve on Life Company projects as department subject matter expert
  • Develops network of industry contacts and stays current with industry trends
  • Other duties as required

Job Requirements:

  • Four-year college degree or a minimum of 8 years equivalent business experience
  • Minimum 10 years of current life underwriting experience, including accelerated underwriting and use of data and models
  • Experience working with underwriting rules engines and rulesets
  • Ability to effectively interact with actuarial and technology partners
  • Knowledge of medical and non-medical aspects of risk selection, and legal aspects of insurance contracts
  • Analytical self-starter
  • True team player with excellent facilitation and communication skills
  • Track record of successful change management
  • Ability to develop and deliver cost-benefit analyses
  • Designations preferred but not required:  FALU, FLMI
